St. Pats Church
Iowa City, Iowa

The original 130 year old Church was destroyed by an F2 tornado on April 13, 2006. Three years later the new Church was dedicated on November 29, 2009. The old church was built in 1879 for $18,000 and only had room for 300 people. The new church has a capacity of 1000 people.

Challenge

The Challenge

The exiting HVAC system was controlled by an obsolete LON based system with a Niagara front end. After suffering through years of license upgrades and less than stellar service, the church was referred to ECSI.

PROCESS

The Process

The mechanical system consisted of 28 heat pumps, heat pump loop system and 6 energy recovery ventilation units. Automated Logic BACnet controllers were added to each piece of equipment and new room temperature sensors were installed. Each heat pump zone was programmed to follow an independent schedule and setpoints and the ERV and Loop Pump systems were tied in.

Result

The Result

The powerful WebCTRL graphical interface allows end users to quickly modify schedules and setpoints to keep the occupants comfortable but conserve as much energy as possible. They can also easily identify any problem areas in the building and remedy the situation before it disrupts the services.
